Jack McAdams "Who You Are Matters"
- Describe where you come from?
I come from a part of the country that is flat, hot, and humid: Houston, Texas. Specifically, I was born neighborhood called Memorial within Houston.
- Tell me where you're going?
As of now, I don't know where I am going. I'm still trying to figure out what exactly it is that I want to do with the life that I have. There are many things that I want to attempt, but the tough part is narrowing down my interests and focusing on one to pursue.
- Tell me how you plan to get there?
To figure out where I am going, I need to assess my interests and come up with a combination of interests that I can reasonably pursue simultaneously. Currently, I study real estate, but I also enjoy film as well. Also, I want to do something entrepreneurial. I'm still trying to figure it out.
- How are you LIKE your parents?
My physical appearance resembles my mom and her side of the family: brown hair, brown eyes, etc. We also share an interest in residential real estate. My dad and I share the same type of cheesy humor. Also, I've come to embody a lot of my dad's mannerisms. We also both tend to laugh at our own jokes regardless of if it's funny or not.
- How are you UNLIKE your parents?
I have never really been a fan of where I grew up, unlike my parents, which is why I wanted to go to school on the west coast. Additionally, I have a much different style clothing wise and I just choose to spend my time more actively rather than watching television, which is how they spend their time since there isn't much to do in Houston.
- Have you developed your own expectations for yourself, or if you were honest, would you say you're operating under someone else's expectations?
I have very strict expectations for myself. I developed these expectations under the belief that the will make me successful in the future. The main expectations I hold for myself are the following: academic excellence, resilience, and self-preservation (working out, taking care of myself, etc.)
- Who, other than a relative, serves as a model for you of someone who lives life with great passion and personal responsibility?
My good friend Madeline has served as a model for me. She truly enjoys the industry she works within and has given herself responsibilities to help achieve her aspirations. I hope to be passionate about something that that I am doing everyday just like her.
- Connecting with the ANIMAL WORLD: What wild animal do you feel a special connection with, and why?
A chameleon is an animal that I feel I have a special connection to. Chameleons shift to blend in with their natural environment so they can be camouflaged within the background rather than being visible. Personally, I feel like I employ a similar strategy.
- Connecting with the NATURE KINGDOMS: Describe a significant childhood encounter with a tree or plant.
Growing up in Texas, we did things some might find unusual, such as hunting squirrels and dove at the neighborhood bayou (river). One day I hammered a piece of wood in between two branches on a tree along the bayou and sat there. I loved the atmosphere because I was in a urban area yet the distance of the tree from the street and the position of the wood plank I hammered made it seem as if I had escaped the city. I loved that feeling.

Hey Jack, I look exactly like my mom too its actually kind of uncanny. At the same age we look identical (granted with different hair but thats a detail).
ReplyDeleteHey Jack, I also have too many things I want to pursue but have a tough time narrowing things down. Its tough for seniors to immediately get into the work space and figure things out.
ReplyDeleteHey Jack, it is definitely a difficult task figuring what direction you want to take your life. Also, I find your chameleon strategy very relatable.
ReplyDeleteHi Jack, I am also a Capricorn! I really like your choice of a chameleon as your connection with the animal world because it reflects such a different perspective. I respect the expectations you have set for yourself and I am sure they will definitely be useful to have throughout your life.
ReplyDeleteHey Jack! It took me a while to figure out what industry I wanted to work in as well, unlike my brother who knew from the beginning. But it seems the key was really to just give everything you are interested in a chance!
ReplyDeleteHey Jack, it is clear to me that you do not enjoy Huston. I am glad that you were able to make it out to California to start pursuing whatever it is you want to become. I am in the same boat with you, but I am sure that your passion will come to you here soon enough!
ReplyDeleteHi Jack, although a lot of people have role models that are usually a lot older, I also wrote about my good friend Leo who also inspires me!
ReplyDeleteHi Jack, great name! I completely agree, it is so difficult to determing what we want to do and narrow down so many interests to one occupation.
